Whether or not the numbers really have significance is still debated in many circles. However, some of the numeric relationships are interesting. There are many interesting ‘games’ that can be played with this feature of Greek and Hebrew, and much of it is absurd. Therefore, the gematria of “Jesus” in Greek is 888 because i = 10, a = 8, s = 200, o = 70, u = 400, s = 200. Since each letter has a numeric equivalent, we can add up each number and get a value. For example, the word “ Jesus” in Greek is iasous. The interesting thing is that when a word is written, it also has a numeric equivalent. They knew when they were writing numbers and when they were writing letters. For example, is “O” a zero or a letter in the alphabet? Is “l” a one or a small L? When they are used, the context tells us which is which and we have no problem understanding it. In a small way, we do the same thing in English. So, in each language, the letters are also used as numbers. Where we have numbers and letters, they have only letters. One of the interesting features of Hebrew and Greek is that in both written languages there are no numeric characters. It is an interesting assessment of biblical numerology. Whether or not the analysis of these number patterns is accurate is up for debate, but I present to you this information condensed from the book Number in Scripture by Bullinger.
Who can deny that 40 is significant? Jesus was in the desert for 40 days, and the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years. No such meaning can be found for the number 5, but we can have fun looking at various retrospective meanings of numbers and seeing how many we can come up with.It seems quite obvious that the Bible uses numbers in patterns. Matthew use the number 14, two times seven, also to show that he was destined for greatness. The number 7 was used in Luke's Gospel in the genealogy of Jesus, to show that he was destined for greatness.
For Methuselah, the formula was simple, reflecting his status as the oldest man: he had his first child at the age of 187, which is 11 X 17, and died at 969, which is 57 X 17. The number 17 was important in Genesis genealogies, from Adam all the way down to the legendary Patriarchs. The Bible does indeed make use of numerology, and in those cases we can find reasons for believing the biblical authors really did consciously have specific meanings in mind. Of course, we should not for a moment think that the biblical authors had either meaning in mind when they wrote, but modern readers look for meanings even when none exists, so for them, 5 has meaning in The Bible. I Corinthians 5:1-5 is the sin unto death for a believer. If you want to preach five as grace that's fine, but grace has five letters in it and in order to bring about grace to you and to me, it took the death of the Son of God, Jesus which has five letters. For instance, there were five major wounds in Christ's body. About 90% of the fives I find in the AV refer to death. Judas is the antichrist and he is the eternal son of death.
The words devil, death, Jesus, Judas and world all have five letters. They had lied unto the Holy Ghost and as a result of their lie, God killed them. In the New Testament and in Acts 5 there is the death of two people, Ananias and Sapphira. In Genesis 5:5 Adam lived 930 years and he died. One view: Grace, redemption, and freedom.Īnother view: Most people preach five as the number of grace, but I find it more times in the Scriptures referring to death.
